    Finally got the exterior of the Hickok Homestead r Finally got the exterior of the Hickok Homestead repainted a few weeks ago! I love the way it turned out, especially the new front door! Next: Landscaping the small area where the door was removed. I'm also having cement poured in the area in front of the gate because there is no way to hook a sprinkler line into that spot. The grass would need to be replaced & that section watered by hand. Not happening! Next spring I will be reconfiguring the backyard.
    Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homest Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homestead renovation has turned out! Still waiting on blinds for the sliding glass door & shutters for the picture window in the living room. Getting everything tidied up (so much dust everywhere) & organized. I'm confident my parents would approve. My mother would love all the counter space in the kitchen!

The renovation of my beloved childhood home is underway! #1Son, Robert, is working hard, prepping for the contractor to work some magic. He's ripping out carpets, tack strips, & baseboards, and peeling off wallpaper. Not to mention cleaning out closets & cupboards. Lots of purging taking place. Look at those gorgeous hardwood floors! But no, I'm not going to leave them exposed, in part because, as is visible in the last photo, they aren't in all of the rooms. My parents added about 675 square feet to the house 43 years ago. In the family room, you can see the outline of where my bedroom used to be before it was converted. It's going to be beautiful again when this project is complete. I think Kenny & Ethel, the parental unit, would be proud. I know they'd be tickled about Robert's involvement! I still have to decide what colors to paint the exterior. 🤔 The dreadful beige & green have to go. Now, if I could just get those pesky home flippers to stop calling, texting, emailing, & snailmailing me with ridiculous lowball offers to buy the house, I'd be a happy woman. 🤦‍♀️ It's not for sale!     Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in M Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in Makena last month. But I'm so happy to be back at my favorite spot again. I'm staying on the 12th floor, as I have numerous times, enjoying this panoramic view from the lanai. Yes, it is different now as those of us visiting are sharing space with a large number of employees & Lahaina residents for whom this resort is their home for the time being. And it was heartbreaking to drive through Lahaina Town for the first time since the fire, especially when I got to the area along the Bypass where almost 100 crosses stand, one for each victim. I just passed through, but this transformed Maui is the everyday reality for its people. I can't help contemplating why such a beautiful, spiritual place & its citizens have to endure such destruction & tragedy. Of course, there are no answers. But aloha is more than a word; it is a belief & way of life. The word has been coopted commercially & socially, & gets thrown around casually, but it means presence (alo) & breath (ha). It is a profound concept when you ponder it. Aloha will carry Maui & its people through this time of grief, mourning, & manifesting a different future than was contemplated, just as everyone I have encountered has welcomed me with warmth & appreciation. In this ever-changing yet unchanging view from my lanai, I see & feel Maui's unbreakable spirit, & am grateful to be able to savor it & this indescribable beauty yet again.     It's a great time to visit Maui because local busi It's a great time to visit Maui because local businesses need tourism to survive! And every business owner & employee thanked us for proceeding with our trip & supporting their efforts to help not just themselves, but their ohana, many of whom are now residing with them & looking for jobs. The aloha spirit at the Kula Lodge & Restaurant is amazing. They do not yet have clearance to use the water, but did that stop them from serving delicious food? Nope! The loco moco was outstanding, served in a paper bowl with plastic utensils and an ice cold bottle of water! They are bringing in barrels of fresh water to cook the items on a limited menu, & wash pots and pans. They even put big water bottles with pumps in the restrooms for guests to wash their hands & are offering stays in their quaint, charming lodge at steeply discounted rates for guests who don't mind a sponge bath! The staff are all upbeat, friendly, delighted to be working . . . and making it work. Over at the Maui Tropical Plantation, the Mill House is now Cafe O'Lei. The Maui onion soup is delicious & the setting beautiful, although this photo of the hillside & fields shows the effect of the ongoing drought on Maui. My photos from previous visits feature a lush, green hillside & crops growing in the fields. But as Californians know, the rain returns -- eventually -- and the grass & vegetation turn green again. I asked Matthew to snap a photo as I was driving of just one of the many fields around the Kahului airport where a total of approximately 10,000 rental cars are sitting idle that would normally be navigated all over the island by happy tourists. The cars have been sitting in what were once pineapple and sugar cane fields, but those industries are long gone. Now Maui relies on tourism & construction to keep its economy running. We stayed in south Maui & never ventured to the west side out of respect for Lahaina town & her people. Maui nō ka ʻoi! 🌺🌴 I can't wait to get back to the island. The great "unsinkable" ship was felled by hubris, lack of preparedness, primitive technology, & yes, that notorious iceberg. In Saab's tale, two women who could not be more different find each other in the icy water & an infant is thrust at them. Luckily, they are pulled into a lifeboat & all 3 survive. Bea is a Lebanese immigrant traveling with her cousin to a land that they believe will provide a better life for their family. Marguerite is from a wealthy nouveau riche NYC family & is being forced into an arranged marriage to an earl to attain acceptance by old money society. The identity of the baby's parents is a mystery. No one was prepared to deal with the myriad aspects of the tragedy's aftermath. And that is what interested Saab, who was fascinated to learn that there were Lebanese passengers on board. "I was more interested in knowing what it was like after. . . . I wanted to tell the story from the perspective of a Lebanese woman coming to America in search of work & I wanted to juxtapose that with someone from America who has everything. . ." Or at least 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 to. Marguerite's reality is actually quite different. We'll discuss Saab's personal connection to the story, inspiration to write it, & research. What if a child is capable of committing heinous crimes? How can a parent accept & live with that realization?⁣ ⁣ Author 𝐉𝐨𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐭 movingly explores the ramifications of a beloved son being tried for & convicted of murder in 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬. Hattie Conlee was forced to confront mounting, competent evidence that her only child, Tommy, was a serial murderer known as the Bedfellow Killer. Wrongly accused & sentenced to life behind bars. A mother never 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 gives up on her child. And there was one time when she heard a noise in the background, a possible clue to Tommy's whereabouts.⁣ ⁣ Hattie was coping well after treatment for stress-induced intrusive thoughts. But they have returned recently, & she feels she's being watched. That someone is lurking near her home in a quiet cove on the coast of Maine. Could it be Tommy? Should she fear her own son?⁣ ⁣ 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 is atmospheric, haunting, richly thought-provoking, & beautifully crafted. Hart deftly reveals pertinent details incrementally, so putting the book down is unthinkable. Every character is credible & Hattie's emotional struggle is visceral, gut-wrenching. . . .     📖 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕 📖 Ｔｈａｎｋ ｙｏｕ， Ａｎｄｒｅ！ I had a deligh 📖 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕 📖 Ｔｈａｎｋ ｙｏｕ， Ａｎｄｒｅ！ I had a delightful & illuminating conversation with debut crime novelist 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐲. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 was just released & is available now. It is a masterfully told noir thriller about a fixer, Coltrane Davis, who wants to leave the hustle behind & concentrate on the things he loves most, his daughter, Naima, & Mona, the woman he hopes to marry. Amassing wealth has not brought Coltrane true happiness & he is, Andre notes, in the midst of an existential crisis. But he gets pulled into one last job & his "hubris" allows him to believe he can complete it & then be free to focus on Naima's budding tennis career as the kind of attentive father he wants to be. Of course, it's not that simple. He tells his best friend, his "day one," Bobby, "Someone has to bend the arc of the moral universe. It don't bend on its own." Bobby has his own issues, but is wise to be more than a little skeptical. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 is contemporary noir -- cinematic, atmospheric, gritty, engrossing. & action-packed -- & Coltrane is a multi-layered, endlessly fascinating character. It is also a meditation on finding true happiness & meaning in one's life, drawing moral lines, race, & privilege. It is one of the best books of 2026. We talked about Andre's childhood in San Diego, his football career, & how he came to realize that he needed to write. And how he did the work, availing himself of an opportunity provided by the NFL to earn an MFA & learn from some incredible mentors. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 is a book he worked on honing to its now virtually perfect state for years. He is scheduled to release his next novel in September 2027. 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨! His prose is exceptionally evocative & beautiful. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨? Andre recommends 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 by 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘴 & 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐰𝐬 by 𝘊.𝘑. Thanks to a loving aunt who championed his work -- or strong-armed the editor? -- his poetry was published in the local newspaper. His journey to publishing the 1sr of his 4 novels to date, 𝐀 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞, took longer & required more work, but was a Read with Jenna Bonus! He followed it up with 𝐀 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞; 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬; and his latest, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. His beautiful books are stories about people facing life's challenges & deciding how best to move forward, & always emotionally resonant. I describe them as quietly profound. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 is set in 1975. The main character, Maggie, & her parents are mired in the aftermath of losing her older brother, Chip. The previous summer, he went away without telling anyone where he was headed. But he came back home in autumn & spent his final days with them at his side. Maggie discovers he spent the summer at The Red Maple Inn, a resort in the Poconos. She must know more about Chip's days there. So she gets a job there, too. She wants to know what Chip experienced, get to know the people he interacted with, and understand how they came to know and see the brother she misses so deeply. She needs to find a way to process her grief and heal in order to face a future that no longer includes her brother. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 is a touching story set in 1975. The main character, Maggie, & her parents are mired in the aftermath of losing her older brother, Chip. The previous summer, he went away without telling anyone where he was headed. But he came back home in autumn and spent his final days with his family at his side. Maggie discovers he spent the summer at The Red Maple Inn, a resort in the Poconos. She is not ready to head off to college without knowing more about Chip's days there. So she gets a job there, too. She wants to know what Chip experienced, get to know the people he interacted with, and understand how they came to know and saw the brother she misses so deeply. She needs to find a way to process her grief and heal in order to face a future that no longer includes her brother. It's a beautiful story that will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced loss, grief, and struggled to find a way to move forward.     📖 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀🌙 I had so much fun reading 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 📖 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀🌙 I had so much fun reading 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 by 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐡 𝐉. 𝐌𝐚𝐚𝐬, the first installment in her Crescent City series, that I had to continue with the @tandemglobalcollective Readalong. We've finished the second book, 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐤𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡. Never have I zipped through 800+ pages so quickly. I am amazed at the creative storytelling. Maas has amassed a compelling, fascinating cast of characters -- some introduced in this volume. They exist in an entirely different world that is purely of her imagination. And they are all kinds of otherworldly creatures with very relatable human-like emotions, conundrums, desires, and goals. And relationships. Bryce Quinlan, the 25-year-old half-Fae & half-human woman who is again at the center of the story is learning more about her powers, & how & when to wield them. She & Hunt Athalar, her handsome fallen angel who is finally free, have moved forward with their relationship. She has even forged a strong bond with her brother, Ruin.  But there are plenty of complications & the story begins with two new characters whose predicament and fates are the focus of the main mystery at the heart of this installment in the series. Once again, the story is infused with numerous unexpected twists, shocking revelations (many related to the new characters), & a cliffhanger ending that left me sitting on my patio in shock, utterly gobsmacked.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ And yes. 𝘖𝘩, 𝘺𝘦𝘴. I 𝘢𝘮 going to read the third book, 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰. 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫, whose debut novel, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞, is an unexpectedly delightful, emotionally resonant, & unique coming-of-age story. Amy has a fascinating background. After surviving Lyme diseasse, she established herself as a mind-body healing expert. She has developed healing techniques, teaches, & works with clients. She is a best-sellng & award-winning author of 5 nonfiction books, with her 6th being released next year. But 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 was her first attempt at writing fiction.     📖 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕 📖 Ｔｈａｎｋ ｙｏｕ， Ｊａｎｅｌｌｅ！ Oh, the tech 📖 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕 📖 Ｔｈａｎｋ ｙｏｕ， Ｊａｎｅｌｌｅ！ Oh, the technology gods did not cooperate initially, but once we convinced them to play nice, my conversation with 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 was delightful. She's the author of six novels -- 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝗪𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝗪𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝗪𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠;𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐬 𝗪𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝗪𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞;𝗪𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫; 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬; 𝐈'𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮; and her most recent book, the award-winning 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞. The action is 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞 moves from Montana to 1990's San Francisco during the dotcom boom. Janelle shared some of her experiences working in the City for approximately eight years, including as journalist & internet/tech expert with Wired. 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞 was inspiired, in part, when Janelle watched a program about the Unabomber & wondered what it woul have been like for a child growing up off the grid with a father much like him. The result? Her gripping coming-of-age story! We also chatted about her writing process, observations of changes in the publishing indicustry, and the book she is currently writing.     📕 𝕌𝕡𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕘 ℝ𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕖 📣 In 2024, 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧 ad 📕 𝕌𝕡𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕘 ℝ𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕖 📣 In 2024, 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧 added another career to his expansive resume: published author. 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐧, a political thriller, kicked off his Emma Noble Series & earned praise from Kirkus Reviews & award-winning author T. Jefferson Parker, among others. She's a rookie FBI agent on the hunt for the truth concerning the disappearance of the son of the Vice President-elect -- 20 years ago. He followed it with 𝐀 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐧, a domestic thriller in which Emma finds herself hunting for her own father, a former CIA operative turned college professor. Is he a killer? He says, "Becoming an author was my late-in-life revelation. It gave me work I care about, a sense of purpose I didn’t know I was missing, & connections with people I never would have met otherwise." Writing also allows him to "escape [to] a place where I am in complete control." The third book in the series is an international thriller. 𝐀 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, will be published on September 24, & is can be preordered. Emma gets a text from a dead man: "Find Nadia." The missing girl knows too much & Emma has to find her . . . without her badge or any backup. Andrew's books are full of tension, mystery, political & international stakes, & complicated characters. The series builds with each successive installment. The Emma Noble series is the kind of love.
