Finally got the exterior of the Hickok Homestead r Finally got the exterior of the Hickok Homestead repainted a few weeks ago! I love the way it turned out, especially the new front door!

Next: Landscaping the small area where the door was removed.

I'm also having cement poured in the area in front of the gate because there is no way to hook a sprinkler line into that spot. The grass would need to be replaced & that section watered by hand. Not happening!

Next spring I will be reconfiguring the backyard.
Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homest Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homestead renovation has turned out! Still waiting on blinds for the sliding glass door & shutters for the picture window in the living room. Getting everything tidied up (so much dust everywhere) & organized. I'm confident my parents would approve. My mother would love all the counter space in the kitchen!
This is a sight no one has seen since 1982! The r This is a sight no one has seen since 1982!

The renovation of my beloved childhood home is underway! #1Son, Robert, is working hard, prepping for the contractor to work some magic. He's ripping out carpets, tack strips, & baseboards, and peeling off wallpaper. Not to mention cleaning out closets & cupboards. Lots of purging taking place.

Look at those gorgeous hardwood floors! But no, I'm not going to leave them exposed, in part because, as is visible in the last photo, they aren't in all of the rooms. My parents added about 675 square feet to the house 43 years ago. In the family room, you can see the outline of where my bedroom used to be before it was converted.

It's going to be beautiful again when this project is complete. I think Kenny & Ethel, the parental unit, would be proud. I know they'd be tickled about Robert's involvement!

I still have to decide what colors to paint the exterior. 🤔 The dreadful beige & green have to go.

Now, if I could just get those pesky home flippers to stop calling, texting, emailing, & snailmailing me with ridiculous lowball offers to buy the house, I'd be a happy woman. 🤦‍♀️ It's not for sale! Not now & not ever . . . at least as long as I'm sucking air into my lungs!

And life just happens . . . sometimes lobbing totally unexpected plot developments at us. More about that to follow.

In the photo, I'm with some of my favorite people on the planet -- my boys & my grandnieces. Quinn is 10 & Raven will be 7 in September! They're headed to 5th & 1st grade this week.

Matthew is still an Accountant with the State of California, Department of Social Services, & Robert is assisting me with a total renovation of the Hickok Homestead on Crescent Avenue. More about that in subsequent posts, too.

Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in M Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in Makena last month. But I'm so happy to be back at my favorite spot again. I'm staying on the 12th floor, as I have numerous times, enjoying this panoramic view from the lanai. Yes, it is different now as those of us visiting are sharing space with a large number of employees & Lahaina residents for whom this resort is their home for the time being. And it was heartbreaking to drive through Lahaina Town for the first time since the fire, especially when I got to the area along the Bypass where almost 100 crosses stand, one for each victim. I just passed through, but this transformed Maui is the everyday reality for its people. I can't help contemplating why such a beautiful, spiritual place & its citizens have to endure such destruction & tragedy. Of course, there are no answers. But aloha is more than a word; it is a belief & way of life. The word has been coopted commercially & socially, & gets thrown around casually, but it means presence (alo) & breath (ha). It is a profound concept when you ponder it. Aloha will carry Maui & its people through this time of grief, mourning, & manifesting a different future than was contemplated, just as everyone I have encountered has welcomed me with warmth & appreciation. In this ever-changing yet unchanging view from my lanai, I see & feel Maui's unbreakable spirit, & am grateful to be able to savor it & this indescribable beauty yet again.

It's a great time to visit Maui because local busi It's a great time to visit Maui because local businesses need tourism to survive! And every business owner & employee thanked us for proceeding with our trip & supporting their efforts to help not just themselves, but their ohana, many of whom are now residing with them & looking for jobs.

The aloha spirit at the Kula Lodge & Restaurant is amazing. They do not yet have clearance to use the water, but did that stop them from serving delicious food? Nope! The loco moco was outstanding, served in a paper bowl with plastic utensils and an ice cold bottle of water! They are bringing in barrels of fresh water to cook the items on a limited menu, & wash pots and pans. They even put big water bottles with pumps in the restrooms for guests to wash their hands & are offering stays in their quaint, charming lodge at steeply discounted rates for guests who don't mind a sponge bath! The staff are all upbeat, friendly, delighted to be working . . . and making it work.

Over at the Maui Tropical Plantation, the Mill House is now Cafe O'Lei. The Maui onion soup is delicious & the setting beautiful, although this photo of the hillside & fields shows the effect of the ongoing drought on Maui. My photos from previous visits feature a lush, green hillside & crops growing in the fields. But as Californians know, the rain returns -- eventually -- and the grass & vegetation turn green again.

I asked Matthew to snap a photo as I was driving of just one of the many fields around the Kahului airport where a total of approximately 10,000 rental cars are sitting idle that would normally be navigated all over the island by happy tourists. The cars have been sitting in what were once pineapple and sugar cane fields, but those industries are long gone. Now Maui relies on tourism & construction to keep its economy running.

We stayed in south Maui & never ventured to the west side out of respect for Lahaina town & her people.

Thank you, Tara!

I had a great time talking with 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐞𝐝𝐣𝐞𝐧 who is celebrating the release this week of her debut adult novel, 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲. It's set in an old & very creepily gothic castle in Austria & involves 𝘵𝘸𝘰 murder mysteries. It's a perfect book to curl up with on a chilly October day!

Tara talked about her fascinating background -- she has lived many different places & held a variety of positions, including with a publisher in Australia.

Her two young adult mystery novels, 𝐍𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬, are still available. We discussed what the differences are between young adult & adult novels.

She also described her writing style. She begins with an outline, but the story changes as she writes. And given that she has extensive experience as an editor, she enjoys the collaborative experience of working with an editor while finalizing her own books. Her next book will also have a gothic vibe & involve murder, of course.

📘𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨 🔍 Amery is the rich, powerful, domin 📘𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨 🔍

Amery is the rich, powerful, domineering matriarch of her family . . . & cunning. Ten years after her husband, Walter, was murdered on their palatial Rhode Island estate, she has summoned her family back for the weekend.

Oldest son Tristan & his pregnant wife, Olivia, are joined by daughter Kinsley & her husband, Vaughn. Youngest son Cooper brings his fiance, Jenna, to meet the family. Surprisingly, Elle arrives with her son, Hunter, who was fathered by Tristan when he was just 19 years old. Ingrid, Amery's long-time friend who has lived on the property since the death of her husband, is also invited.

So begins a weekend of treachery, backstabbing, lies, machinations . . . and murder. The characters in author 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐞's atmospheric & very clever thriller, 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐢𝐟𝐞, are largely despicable which is why it is being likened to "Succession." Logan Roy would tell this group, as he did his children, "You are not serious people!"

They don't realize until they arrive that they are going to spend their time solving (or confessing to?) Walter's murder. The person who correctly identifies the killer wins the "door prize" -- the estate valued at $28 million.

Told through multiple points of view, the narrative shifts between that fateful night a decade ago & present day. Trying to guess who killed Walter is only part of the fun. The star of this tale is Amery, who is always a step ahead of her guests. She knows all of them well -- their scandalous pasts & fatal weaknesses -- & skillfully matches wits with Jenna, who arrives unaware that Amery is, of course, fully prepared for the events that are about to unfold . . . & knows the real reason Jenna is there.

𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐢𝐟𝐞 is fast-paced & entertaining, in no small part because of the believable, crackling dialogue Kane employs to reveal her characters' personalities, histories, & relationships with each other. It's an excellent choice to read under a blanket on a crisp autumn day.

Author 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐞𝐝𝐣𝐞𝐧's impressive adult debut novel is set at a creepy, gothic castle in Austria. The story is related via Mia's first-person narrative. She returns to the castle-turned-hotel where her cousin was murdered in 2015, when Mia was there with him & her aunt, a true crime author researching the unsolved 1969 murders of the hotel's owners. Who is the murderer? Is it the man who was convicted of the crime . . . or someone else?

Tara is also the author of two young adult mystery novels, 𝐍𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬, & has had many short stories published.

It's the beautiful, thought-provoking, & moving story of a little girl who shows up in a small town situated in the Pacific Northwest rain forest. She is filthy, malnourished, dehydrated, & has ligature scars, along with evidence of badly healed fractures. She is utterly feral. It's impossible to tell exactly how old she is -- the best guess is 5 or 6 -- & she doesn't speak, but she growls. She has a wolf pup with her. The entire small town becomes fascinated with her.

Award-winning author 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐋'𝐄𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞 joined me again to talk about the fifth engrossing installment in his acclaimed Detective Nathan Parker Series, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬. It's another "ripped from the headlines" story in which the life of Miguel, Nathan's foster son, is at stake. Nathan experiences heart-wrenchingly believable moments of sheer terror, nearly uncontrollable anger, frustration, panic, & desperation.

We discussed the initial inspiration for the series which deals with contemporary issues. 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬, in particular, could not be more timely.

This is a great time to get caught up on the series because the still-untitled sixth installment will be available next summer & will again focus on Billie Carson, a beloved & entertaining integral character in the series.

We also had an illuminating discussion about the 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 of being an author today.

𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴:

In schools & churches, hotel rooms & nail salons, law firms & fried-fish shops; in cramped, dingy apartments & luxury, gated communities, the men, women, & children in American Hagwon struggle to find satisfaction & meaning in a world that seems to grow less forgiving with each passing year. Once comfortably middle class in Korea, John & Helen Koh & their 3 children — Bo, DH, & Mido — find their lives upended, first by a shocking betrayal by John’s oldest friend, then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Desperately striving to regain their footing, they leave Seoul for Sydney & eventually settle in Southern California — where new vistas of opportunity open up for the children as their parents, strangers in a strange land, must adjust to a new life in which their experience & education mean little, & they set their sights on whatever it takes to provide for their children’s futures. The Kohs, their friends, relatives, & even their foes move in & out of each other’s lives as they navigate new courses across the years, always nursing the almost all-consuming faith that education will lead the next generation to success & security.

Min Jin Lee has crafted an unforgettable, panoramic novel where the smallest of gestures can have enormous repercussions, where the bonds of family & of memory twist & fray but rarely break, & where willful self-sacrifice - for the benefit of loved ones & even strangers — is a kind of prayer.

🔎 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 🏡 Imagine that you accidentally see 🔎 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 🏡

Imagine that you accidentally see an email addressed to your husband from a realtor that says, "Congratulations on your new home!" You had no idea he was buying a house. The realtor advises where the key can be found & you're 𝘴𝘰 excited about the property the realtor described as "pure bliss" that you hop in your car & drive to the address to see it!

But when you arrive, you find your husband's vehicle there. (That's not, of course, where he 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 he would be spending the day.) Perhaps he's readying the place to surprise you! Should you leave & wait for his big reveal? Or should you surprise 𝘩𝘪𝘮 & express your happiness?

As you're debating, you see him step out onto the deck. Soon he's followed by another woman. And it quickly becomes obvious that they are 𝘯𝘰𝘵 merely finalizing a real estate transaction.

Who is she? Is your husband having an affair? Should you confront him immediately? Or do some sleuthing to be sure before you hurl accusations?

From that opening, author 𝐃.𝐋. 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫 takes readers on a twist-filled journey via Elena's first-person narrative. She believed that she & Ethan were happy, & never had a reason to doubt him. So she is intent on -- indeed, obsessed with -- discovering the truth. To say that her investigation is fraught with complications is putting it mildly. Another first-person narrative from Summer (the woman on the deck) provides a completely different perspective. Interstitial chapters from an unknown narrator describe a growing fire in a remote location & a desperate need for help. When did that occur? Did it actually happen?

I had a wonderful time chatting with award-winning author 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐋'𝐄𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞 recently & am happy to announce that he has agreed to be my second "repeat offender."

We're going to chat again, this time focusing on the fifth and 𝘧𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴 installment in his acclaimed Detective Nathan Parker Series, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬.

He holds a perfect record -- every book in the series has earned 5 stars from me. 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 is even more emotionally resonant, compelling, & fraught with tension than the previous volumes. Earlier in the series, Parker encountered Miguel, a young boy on the run from the Mexican cartel that murdered his family. Miguel became Parker's foster son. The story has advanced a few years & Parker has truly become Miguel’s 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 in every meaningful way. In this latest volume, Miguel's bright future & very life are at stake, making Parker empathetic & relatable at a deeper level. Parker is anticipating the birth of his biological child, as well, & experiences heart-wrenchingly believable moments of sheer terror, nearly uncontrollable anger, frustration, panic, & desperation.

Thank you, Amy!

I had such a delightful, wide-ranching, & informative conversation with 𝐀𝐦𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬! She's so accomplished & has a fascinating background. We talked a little about her childhood & the brilliant comment her father made to her at a pivotal point in her life. We also discussed her years as a young woman living in New York City on a quest, which is the subject of her entertaining & profound memoir, 𝐀𝐦𝐲 𝐈𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. She shared how her script for 𝘔𝘳. 𝘞𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 was developed into a film. She also adapted 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘺 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 for the screen.

I knew that 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 was adapted into an Off-Broadway play in 2012, but I didn't realize that it is also a book. She began writing it while going through menopause when she couldn't sleep. So it started out as "something, wacky, weird, & wonderful," but her mother had dementia at that time & it ended up being "about a mother & daughter finding each other."

𝐀𝐦𝐲 𝐈𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 is a hilarious & poignant small coffee table book filled with beautiful artwork. It's basically a series of vignettes. And Amy's explanation of the title is absolutely priceless.

Along with 𝐁.𝐊. 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐨𝐧, Amy crafted an online course, 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐝. You can subscribe to updates at noonmiracle.com & receive notifications about all of their programs, classes, & events, & purchase the book -- a collection of short essays, poems, and reflections on grief.

𝐉𝐨𝐝𝐢 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐭 has long been one of my favorite authors, so I was delighted when I returned from Maui to find a wonderful box containing her 30th book, 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬. Thank you, 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬, for also sending the accompanying charger, flashlight, & water bottle. They will definitely come in handy! (The flashlight is already on my keychain.)

My book club is reading 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 & will be discussing it later this month.

𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴:

On September 11, 2001, when Molly Fitzgerald was only two months old, her mother went to an appointment at the World Trade Center . . . and never came home. Her father and the stepmother who raised her couldn’t have loved her more, but she still grew up with a healthy dread of disasters.

Now an adult, she runs the Rhode Island Department for Emergency Preparedness, mapping out ways to save lives during storms, epidemics, and airplane crashes. She and her husband, Jesse -- a police polygraph expert with his own history of crisis -- have found a love that is a solace in a dangerous world. But then the unexpected upends their new marriage, leading them both to question everything they thought they knew.

Moving between past & present, 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 is an epic story of the lies we tell ourselves as we write the narratives of our lives, the plans we design to protect ourselves at the worst moments, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters.

Everyone in Bramblewood knows Roz Lancaster has made bad decisions.

The messy divorce. The drinking. The affair with another woman's husband.

So when Roz wakes after a night of torrential rain to find that very woman dead on her living room floor, with blood on her own hands & a gun beside her bed, no one is going to believe she's innocent. Especially not Allison Savage.

A true-crime podcaster returning to her hometown to investigate the disappearance of a local mother, Allison quickly realizes the two cases may be connected. The deeper she digs into Bramblewood's carefully cultivated charm, the more secrets begin to surface . . . and the more dangerous the truth becomes.

Thank you, Virginia!

I had a delightful conversation with 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡, whose childhood dream of becoming author is her reality. Her debut, 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝗪𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞, published in 2025, is a brilliantly imagined and crafted twisty tale of secrets, betrayals, & murder. It's also timely given the headlines & ongoing discourse about not just the Cornell case, but sexual assault & abuse of power. Virginia kept me guessing about her characters, their motivations, & what 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 happened on a fateful night a decade earlier right up to the end.

𝐌𝐫. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫 will be released on November 10, 2026, & she discussed how the idea for the story came to her as she finished watching "The Tinder Swindler" on Netflix & imagined a better ending to that story. She conducted a lot of research into con artists & the people they prey on to craft a thoroughly engrossing, credible tale of three women who refuse to be victims! Available for preorder 𝘯𝘰𝘸!

Virginia is definitely a plotter who outlines her books thoroughly & knows how the book will end before she starts writing. In both novels the story is skillfully related through multiple points of view & in different voices.

Virginia graciously took time out from a retreat to speak with me. She described three ideas for her next book that she is considering, so stay tuned to see which she develops because I will definitely be reading it.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨? Virginia says 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐞𝐧 is her all-time favorite book & recommends the new Netflix adaptation. She also enjoyed 𝐅𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐲 by 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐡 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 and is about to read 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 by 𝐈𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫.

Author 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡's debut novel, 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝗪𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞, convincingly demonstrated what a talented writer she is. That dark, twisty story about two women who have kept a secret about the tragic death of their friend for a decade kept me guessing right up to the shocking conclusion.

Her next thriller, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫, is equally clever and engrossing. Inspired by the television miniseries, "Dirty John," and the real case it was based on, as well as Netflix's "The Tinder Swindler," it's the timely story of women who refuse to be victims of a serial conman. Library Journal says it's "recommended for those . . . who appreciate women who fight back." I couldn't put it down & found myself You will cheer for the trio of flawed, but endearing & relatable would-be heroines who are intent on keeping the charming Rhys -- or whatever his 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 name is -- from claiming even one more victim!

𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐩𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 knows her subject matter. She was a national TV reporter, including with a network affiliate in New York. She brings her experience & authenticity to the 1st installment in her Sydney Price series, 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, available Jan. 1, 2027. She describes it as "Succession meets The Morning Show with a deadly twist."

Sydney wants to follow in her mother's footsteps as an investigative reporter at WNEX-TV, headquartered at legendary 30 Rock. Right across the street, her family's company, Glenmont Media, publishes the largest legacy news magazine in the world. After her mother's death, her father remarried, gave up acting, & joined Glenmont. Sydney's aloof & judgmental stepmother, Judith, & her brother, Arthur, are Glenmont's majority shareholders. Sydney has always been close to her stepbrother, James, & Connor, his cousin, both of whom work at Glenmont. But there is trouble brewing. Uncle Arthur is on his deathbed & the 2 young men are at odds about the company's future. Connor has called for a critical board meeting & vote.

But an explosion rocks Glenmont's boardroom & executive suite, & it's a defining moment for Sydney. Her life will never be the same again because not only does she get her chance to prove she can chase bigger stories than the annual arrival of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The story could not be more personal to her because nearly all of her family members, as well as her former boyfriend & a colleague are somehow involved. Suddenly, Sydney has no idea who she can trust. It's clear that someone was intent on ensuring the board did not convene. But why? And who was so desperate to ensure the voting did not proceed that they would set off pipe bombs to disrupt the agenda?

First, thanks go to @bibliolifestyle & @harperperennial for sending me a copy of 𝗪𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 by 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝗪𝐨𝐨, which was released on September 8, 2026. Her debut novel is getting great reviews. Described as an "atmospheric," "old-school gothic mystery" with "an escalating sense of dread," Woo is being praised for crafting a "lush, spellbinding page-turner" that is "complex," "unforgettable," and will make readers "feel their skin prickle" while reading it.

Sounds like a perfect book to read in October, doesn't it?

𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴:

It seems like divine intervention when newly pregnant, freshly unemployed Elinor unexpectedly inherits Wildwood, her family’s estate. She convinces her husband to move to the sprawling wilderness of rural Vermont to make a home & raise their baby.

Estranged from her extended family since childhood, Wildwood is a mystery to Elinor. She's an outsider to townsfolk & the prominent Brook family who control the town & its history. Knowing little of the house or its past, save for snapshots of childhood memories, she becomes entranced by an eerie 19th-century mural in the primary bedroom she calls “the Forest of the Dead.”

Instead of growing more settled in her new home, Elinor feels increasingly isolated & uneasy. She begins to have dreams that feel like memories, phantasmagorical visions of something terrible that happened long ago. Haunted by the mystery of why her family fell apart, she’s determined to uncover the secrets of her ancestry buried deep in the past & even deeper in the woods . . . secrets kept by powerful forces within the house & town.

Obsessed with finding the truth, Elinor knows she must answer when “the Forest of the Dead” calls her. Someone wants her to know they were there first; someone else is trying to get in. The nightmares creep into her waking hours & Elinor embarks on a journey taking her back & forth in time to the dark recesses of memories, the streets of modern Salem, & the haunted corners of this otherworld
